Prevent Breakdowns Before They Happen
Most roadside breakdowns are preventable with regular vehicle maintenance. At New West Towing, we see the same preventable issues time and time again. Use this checklist to keep your vehicle reliable and avoid expensive tow bills.
Monthly Checks
Tire Pressure and Condition: Check all tire pressures (including the spare) monthly. Look for uneven wear, bulges, or cracks. Properly inflated tires improve fuel economy and handling.
Fluid Levels: Check engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid. Top up as needed and look for any leaks under your vehicle.
Lights: Walk around your vehicle and check all lights—headlights, tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights. Replace any burned-out bulbs immediately.
Seasonal Checks
Battery: Test your battery before summer and winter. Extreme temperatures are hard on batteries. Clean any corrosion from terminals.
Belts and Hoses: Inspect drive belts for cracks and wear. Check coolant hoses for soft spots, leaks, or bulges.
Brakes: Listen for squealing or grinding. Have brake pads and rotors inspected at every oil change.
Annual Checks
Alignment: Poor alignment causes uneven tire wear and poor handling. Get an alignment check annually or if you hit a large pothole.
Suspension: Test your shocks by pushing down on each corner of the vehicle. It should bounce once and settle. Excessive bouncing means worn shocks.
Following this checklist will significantly reduce your chances of a roadside breakdown. But if you do need help, New West Towing is always just a phone call away at 778-558-5657.
