Stay Safe on BC Roads This Winter
Winter in British Columbia brings beautiful snowy landscapes but also dangerous driving conditions. At New West Towing, we respond to countless winter-related breakdowns and accidents each year. Here are our top five tips to keep you safe on the road this winter.
1. Install Winter Tires
In BC, winter tires are legally required on most highways from October 1 to April 30. But beyond the legal requirement, winter tires dramatically improve your traction, braking, and handling in cold, wet, and icy conditions. Make sure your tires have at least 3.5mm of tread depth.
2. Keep an Emergency Kit in Your Vehicle
Pack a winter emergency kit that includes a blanket, flashlight, jumper cables, ice scraper, small shovel, sand or kitty litter for traction, snacks, water, and a phone charger. This kit could be a lifesaver if you get stranded.
3. Check Your Battery Before Winter Hits
Cold weather is tough on car batteries. Have your battery tested before winter arrives—most auto parts stores will do this for free. A battery that is three or more years old may need to be replaced before it leaves you stranded on a cold morning.
4. Reduce Speed and Increase Following Distance
On wet, icy, or snowy roads, reduce your speed significantly and increase your following distance to at least four seconds. This gives you more time to react and more room to stop safely.
5. Know When to Stay Home
Sometimes the safest driving decision is not to drive at all. If conditions are severe, consider postponing your trip. Check DriveBC for current road conditions before heading out.
